Koska en vastanut oveen, ystäväni tuli koputtamaan olohuoneen ikkunaan. Since I didn't answer the door, my friend came and knocked on the living room window.

jalalla vs. jalassa

Hän jäi istumaan, vaikka olisi ollut kohteliasta nousta jaloilleen. He remained sitting even though it would have been polite to get up.

joella vs. joessa

junalla vs. junassa (in addition to all other forms of transportation!)

Risto oli junassa kello neljästä kello kahdeksaan, eli hänen matkansa kesti neljä tuntia. Chris was on the train from four (o'clock) until eight, in other words, his trip took four hours.

Sunnuntaisin käyn kirkolla. On Sundays I visit the center of the village. (NB. This usage of kirkko comes from the word kirkonkylä, a village with a church in it. Thus to visit the center of the village is to visit the area of town around the church, and since the church is always near the center, you're visiting the area around it or nearby, the adessive is used! This type of difference also occurs with the words yliopisto and kaupunki.)
Sunnuntaisin käyn kirkossa. On Sundays I go to church. On Sundays I attend church.
Eilen olin kirkossa. Yesterday I was in church. Yesterday I was in the church.
Eilen kävin kirkossa. Yesterday I went to church. Yesterday I attended church. (NB. The verb käydä always takes the inessive, even though it means to go to or to visit.)

Tulin maahan eilen. I arrived in the country yesterday.
Tulin maalle eilen. I arrived in the countryside yesterday.
Olen aivan maassa. I am totally depressed.
Hän oli siipi maassa. He was depressed.

varrella vs. varressa

Suomessa on paljon kyliä, jotka ovat jokien ja koskien varrella. There are a lot of villages in Finland that are on the banks of rivers and rapids.
