Information in Brief

Introduction

I am majoring in Information Studies at the University of Tampere, Finland. For secondary subjects I have, among other things, studied Finnish Literature, Finnish Linguistics, English Philology, Hypermedia, and Philosophy. I am interested in languages in general, and especially in written communication.

I also work as a freelance translator, editor, and designer (English and Swedish into Finnish, Finnish into English).

My Web site is mostly in Finnish and includes some fictional stories (fantasy or fairy tales), poems, and writings about literature, Finnish language, and information retrieval. There is also biography of J. R. R. Tolkien, which is written in Swedish.

In English I have written a couple of small reports on the Conference on Media Skills and Competence held at the University of Tampere on May 2005. They were published in the PDF newsletter European Media Literacy On-line Review 4/2005 (pages 4–6) with headings “Finnish practices: northern lights in media literacy” and “Special event: grouping together adults and adolescents with media”. There is also a lengthy comment (as well as some shorter ones) on line-breaking conventions, which I contributed to a public discussion thread while Mozilla’s page rendering engine, Gecko, was being redesigned in 2007 (by the way, this discussion motivated me to take English Philology as an extra subject, as I found my knowledge of the language somewhat lacking).

Editorial works and layouts

I have edited and made up publications which relate to the disciplines of Literary or (especially digital) Cultural and Media Research. Below, I list the publications in reverse order according to the year of publication. Imitating the conventions of traditional library cataloguing, the bibliographical data begin with the title of the publication and, following a slash, the principal author(s). Mostly the works have been published as PDF documents in the Hypermedia Laboratory Net Series (Hypermedia­laboratorion verkko­julkaisuja) or Working Papers (Tutkimus­raportteja). The publications are in English or in Finnish (but usually with at least a summary in English).
