The diabolical k

K is one of the worst letters to appear before you when you need to figure out how the last syllable before the ending changes. K can either disappear altogether, double, change into v, j, g, or not change at all.

Type of change Nominative Genitive
k ~ ø- jalka jalan
k ~ kk- liike liikkeen
uku/yky ~ uvu-/yvy- puku puvun
lki ~ lje- kylki kyljen
rki ~ rje- rki rjen
nk ~ ng- Helsinki Helsingin

NB. Poika changes to pojan in the genitive, in other words the vowel combination -oia- becomes -oja-. Note that the same change does not occur in the pair sika ~ sian because there aren't three vowels in a row in the genitive form.
